Self Project - Why it matters?
There are times when we feel we don’t have much going on in life. Specially for those who are doing 9-5.
You get up, do your morning rituals, go to work, come back after work, have dinner with family, go for a walk if you have some time, watch some TV, go to bed, rinse and repeat the next day.
Now, I am not saying everyone’s typical day looks like this but most of the household in the US can relate to that.
If you have never watched a show called ‘Weeds’, do me a favor and watch its intro song and video, that intro sums up what I am trying to say here. I will share the link here from YouTube so that you don’t have to go looking for it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvGd8vwWLpE&t=40s
The Norm
There’s nothing wrong with having a normal day, normal job, normal things to do, right? But what is even that ‘normal’?
Normality is rather subjective. And for some, doing their normal thing can be very fulfilling while for others, they feel there is so much more to life than just 9-5 and other normal things but they aren’t sure what are those.
Perhaps going on a vacation every once in a while or doing something fun. But that just lasts few days, or weeks tops and then they are back to ‘normal’ again. And it gets mundane and boring again.
If not normal then what?
So how can one have a ‘normal’ life and keep it exciting?
If you’re just drifting around in life & feel like there’s nothing exciting going on, create a self-project.
The project can be anything that you have slight interest on: photography, financial planning, gardening, volunteering, learning an instrument, anything really!
Once you have chosen a project to work on, make plans & take actions.
Some of you might think there’s not much time left to spare in a day after all the ‘normal’ stuff you do but the thing is, you don’t have to have a lot of time for this personal project.
You just have to make a commitment that you will work on it everyday whether it is an hour, 2 hours or it is just 5 minutes. You just have to stay consistent. That will get you into the habit of doing the thing no matter what and it will compound over time.
And consistency doesn’t mean 2 hours every day, it means some time everyday no matter the length of that time. It’s okay to miss a day or two because you had to attend your son’s game or take your pet to a vet after work.
However, even then, you still can manage to take few notes, on your phone, for the project while doing all that. The habit of simply taking notes everyday on things you like to work will keep you inspired. You can dissect the notes later when you actually sit down to work on the thing.
What you can do?
This is exactly what I do to keep my focus on the things, outside of my 9-5, social life, hobbies, etc.
Whenever an idea pops in my head, I write it down in my phone (I use Notion for this, you can simply use note app on your phone). And the best thing is: it takes only few seconds.
Also, at the end of the each day, I write down few things that happened on the day and think if any of those happenings were interesting at all.
These two actions, throughout the day, is how I get ideas for my writings, scripts or simply a reminder to research on videos I want to work on.
My life has gotten more exciting after I started staying consistent on things I have always wanted to do and what was even more exciting and relieving was that consistency didn’t mean same amount of relentless effort every single day.
You’ll then soon realize that working on a self created project for a personal goal is gonna be far more fulfilling than just binging shows/videogames or hanging out with folks who are just talking about good ole days without any purpose in their lives.
I hope you get to make time to do that one thing today and stay consistent for a bit to see how it feels :)
Thank you for reading.
I will see you again soon!
Cheers.
